Lakisha has over twenty-five years of experience working alongside children and families. She started as an assistant at fourteen years old and worked her way through all positions up to director and now owner of her own small center. She has worked in her own home programs, large and small centers, summer camps and public-school settings. Her experience is wide ranging which gives her the unique ability to understand the perspectives of many types of early childhood positions and settings. Currently she spends her time facilitating play and learning with her group of two- thru five-year-old children at her center Discover Early Learning Center in Poolesville, MD. Her passion for Authentic Childhood prompted her to start an organization called Play Empowers which advocates and defends a child’s right to a play filled childhood. Her advocacy also includes hosting several podcasts and writing articles and blog posts about developmentally appropriate care for young children. While working directly with children will always be her main focus, Lakisha also loves working with adults through her workshops, keynote addresses, and site consultation visits or ongoing mentoring.
